Gen. Pervez Musharraf’s Legacy Will Be Remembered With Mixed Feelings & Reservation

The former President of Pakistan Gen. Pervez Musharraf passed away in Dubai this week, he was 79. The former Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff’s legacy will be remembered with mixed feelings and reservation by the Pakistani nation and the overseas Pakistani community, said Shazada Hayat President UICF (UK) and international community welfare campaigner.
Gen. Musharraf was a committed Pakistani Army Officer who was involved with the war campaign of 1965 and 1971 and the Kargil War 1999 and rose through the ranks with grit, determination and dedication. His bravery and courage as a soldier can never be questioned as his action on the battlefield speaks volumes. When the opportunity arose in 1998 for Pakistan to select its army chief of staff there were 10 most senior generals above Gen. Pervez Musharraf for the powerful coveted position. Top of the list to be the next army chief of Pakistan on seniority and on merit, was the outstanding Lt. Gen. Ali Kuli Khan. In accordance to the norms, tradition and rules of the Pakistan army, Gen. Pervez Musharraf was nowhere near being appointed the top most powerful post of Pakistan army chief. Gen, Pervez Musharraf was not just amazed but shocked when the then Prime Minister of Pakistan Mian Nawaz Sharif chose him from the bottom of the list and bestowed on him the mighty power as the army chief of staff of Pakistan.
This again was history repeating itself and was the same manner and methodology used by his predecessor the then Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto in 1976. Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto   chose from the bottom of the list Gen. Zia-ul-Haq and made him Pakistan Army Chief of Staff, said Shazada Hayat.

The Pakistani nation was amazed just as Gen. Pervez Musharraf as to what was the Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s intention of making Gen. Pervez Musharraf the army chief of staff, over and above those who were more senior than him. Just as Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, Prime Minister Mian Nawaz Sharif paid a catastrophic price, the after affects of his fatal judgement haunts Mian Nawaz Sharif to this day. History witnessed not long after taking control Gen Zia-ul-Haq unleashed his power on Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, resulting in Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto being hanged.
The Bhutto family paid the most catastrophic price than any other political family in the history of Pakistan. The same fate was planned by Gen. Pervez Musharraf for Priem Minister Mian Nawaz Sharif. If for any reason Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and Mian Nawaz Sharif thought by making the next army chief from the bottom of the list will serve their political interest, then they made a fatal and catastrophic error of judgement. This most certainly cost Zulfikar Ali Bhutto his life and Mian Nawaz Sharif would have also suffered the same fate, had it not been for the intervention of Saudi Arabia.

This clearly shows the Pakistan army has a sworn fundamental principle of code and conduct of honour, that they will never be loyal to any Pakistani politicians over and above their loyalty to their sacred institution, come what may. The Pakistan armed forces will never compromise the national interest of Pakistan and the national interest and welfare of the Pakistan armed forces.
Various successive Pakistani leaders learnt this lesson to their horror. More recently there was a huge political turmoil, drama and pandemonium by the politicians of Pakistan as to who should be the next Pakistan army chief of staff. Prime Minister Shabaz Sharif of PDM went out of his way to select the current Army Chief of Staff Gen. Asim Munir. Looking back at history if P M Shabaz Sharif is under any illusion, by believing that he can expect any special favours for his gesture, for selecting the new army chief for political reasons, then this may come back to haunt him, just as Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and Mian Nawaz Shariff were made to endure catastrophic consequences, believing that by choosing an army chief of their liking may well serve their political ambitions, said Shazada Hayat.
The present Army Chief of Staff Gen. Asim Munir is a formidable patriotic professional and first Army Chief of Staff of Pakistan, who has the entire Quran etched in his heart and mind. This naturally means that he will show absolutely no mercy for anyone who goes against the grain of the teaching of the Quran, or the national interest of the national and the welfare of the people of Pakistan

As a result, one thing is for sure, that Gen. Pervez Musharraf’s reign was stable and prosperous for Pakistan and most certainly a million times better than what Pakistan is being made to endure today. Pakistan now is practically on the life support machine in terms of economic chaos and disaster. The Pakistani nation and the overseas Pakistani community have mixed feelings and reservations. As a soldier Gen. Pervez Musharraf has served his nation with pride and patriotism. However, as a politician some of his decisions made the Pakistani nation suffer, the consequence today and paying a catastrophic price to say the least, Explained by Shazada Hayat.
